Why people choose composite for the front of the house
A composite door is a solid slab construction rather than a hollow frame with panels clipped into it. That is what you feel when you close one: it lands with weight, it sits tight against its seals, and it does not flex when you lean on the handle. For a front door, the one visitors see and the one you rely on for security, that difference is worth paying for.
The finish is the second reason. Composite doors hold their colour and their surface far better than a painted timber door, which means no rubbing down and repainting every couple of summers. A wipe with soapy water is the entire maintenance schedule.

Composite construction, glazing and hardware explained
Composite doors vary widely in quality, and most of what separates a good one from a poor one is invisible once it is hung. Here is what we look at when specifying yours.
Slab construction
A composite door is built as a solid slab with an insulating core and a durable outer skin, rather than assembled from thin sections. That construction is what gives it the weight, the rigidity and the thermal performance.
It is also why composite doors do not swell and stick in wet weather the way a timber door does: a common reason people replace a front door in the first place.
Glazing options
Full glazed, half glazed, quarter panels, side lights and top lights are all possible depending on how much daylight you want in the hall and how much privacy you need at the front.
Where glazing sits at a position covered by building regulations, toughened glass is specified as a matter of course. Obscure patterns are available where the door faces a path or a neighbouring window.
Frames, thresholds and fixing
The best slab in the world performs badly in a frame that is not square or not properly fixed. We remove the old frame, check the opening, pack and fix the new frame into sound masonry, and seal it inside and out.
Threshold detailing decides whether water runs away from the house or into the floor. It gets set correctly rather than sealed over afterwards.
Hardware and finishes
Handles, letterplates, knockers, spyholes, hinges and cylinder specification are agreed at survey and matched across the property where you want a consistent look.
Colour is chosen at survey too, and because composite holds its finish there is no practical reason to stick to a safe colour if you want a strong one.
Composite versus UPVC versus aluminium
Composite is the pick for a front door where solidity and appearance matter most. UPVC in Eurocell or Rehau profile is the sensible option for back doors, utility doors and where budget leads. Smarts aluminium bi-folds are the answer when you want to open up a whole rear elevation rather than replace a single door.
We fit all three, so the recommendation you get is based on the opening rather than on what we happen to stock.

- How long does fitting take?
- A composite front door is normally a same-day installation. Manufacturing is the longer part: plan on a minimum of 10 weeks from order.
- Are composite doors more secure than UPVC?
- A composite slab is denser and more rigid, which helps. But most real-world security comes from multi-point locking that fully engages and a frame that is fixed properly into sound masonry. We do both as standard.
- What guarantee do I get?

- Composite finishes are far more colour-stable than paint on timber. A south-facing door will always see more UV than a north-facing one, but you are not looking at the annual repaint a timber door demands.
